Jos Crisis: IBB Testifies Next Week
The former Military President, General Ibrahim B. Babangida (Rtd) may storm the Justice Bola Ajibola commission, Thursday, July 28, to clear himself of allegations of complicity in the Jos sectarian violence of Nov 28 29, last year, just as Hausa/Fulani Moslems shunned the commission.
The commission had invited General Babangida following allegations levelled against him by witnesses, who gave evidence before the panel. Babangida, Tuesday, July 21, sent his representative, Barrister Mohammed Ndayako. Ndayako had told the commission that the invitation was not accompanied with the necessary documents, which according to him, would enable his client respond to the allegations.
Consequently, he asked for a new date, Thursday to enable his client respond. Justice Ajibola expressed satisfaction that the former Head of the Military Junta, appeared before the commission.
The chairman, who stated that the invitation was to underscore the principle of fair hearing from both sides, explained that it was a mark of respect for the commission and rule of the law among others. Meanwhile, all Islamic groups and individuals, Hausa Fulani Moslems in and outside the state, invited by the commission have shunned the panel.
Some of them include Jasawa Development Association, Bauchi Road; Jamtu Nasil Islam (JNI), Council of Ulama, Jos Central Mosque. The individuals include Ibrahim Dansuki Nakande, a former Minister, Alhaji Ahmadu Ali Kazaure, Alhaiji Samaila Mohammed, member, House of Representatives, Abuja, and Alhaji Inuwa Ali. Others include Alhaji Ibrahim N. Mantu, former Deputy Senate President, and Alhaji Sale Hassan.
Besides, Jamil motors, Enugu Road, Jos, and Alhaji Abba Motors, Bauchi Road, would appear before the commission on July 28, following witnesses’ evidence that the duo had fore-knowledge of the violence. They were said to have removed their vehicles from the car shops to Abuja and Bauchi, Bauchi State to avoid the destruction of their wares.
The security chiefs General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Armoured Division; the State Police Commissioner; Director State Security Service (SSS); Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Nasarawa Gwom; Comptroller of Immigration Service; Controller of Customs in the state; Officer in charge of Police outpost, Naraguta and DPO Laranto Police Station, Jos, are expected to appear on July 31, 2009.
