Assets Declaration: Customs Officers Panic As Ultimatum Expires
There is panic and appre
hension in the Nigeria Customs Services (NCS) following the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum given by the Comptroller General of Customs, Haemmed Ali, for all officers to declare their assets.
The Tide correspondent in Rivers State gathered that the order did not go down well with some officers as it could be used to witch-hunt some persons who might have amassed wealth that could not equate with their salaries.
Our correspondent also learnt that while some are ready to declare their assets with some falsified information, others are willing to leave the service voluntarily as the outcome may not be favourable to them at the end of the day.
The officers who spoke with our correspondent on anonymity further said the exercise would be in futility as it is strange to the organization despite the reforms by the new Comptroller General of Customs, Hammed Ali.
It would be recalled that the Comptroller General of Customs had in a bid to sanitise the outfit in a circular signed by the comptroller General of customs and addressed to all Deputy Comptrollers General, zonal co-coordinators and customs area controllers said the measure was to ensure transparency and compliance with the rule of law.
Ali further said the assets declaration directive was in compliance with the Bank Employees Declaration of Assets Act Cap B1 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, and observed that many officer had not complied with the provisions of the act over the years.
