Community Development Agency Empowers 5,000 Youths
The Akwa Ibom State
Agency for Community Development says it has empowered 5000 youths in the past one year through its community projects.
The General Manager of the agency, Mr Ishmael Akpan, made the disclosure in an interview with newsmen in Uyo.
Akpan said that the agency, within the period, also released N67 million for 37 communities that benefited from the projects.
He noted that the money was released in phases to ensure proper monitoring and accountability.
The general manager said that the youths were engaged in 109 micro projects, established in 15 local government areas across the state.
“Over 5000 youths have been empowered by the agency in the last nine months because the objective of the programme is to enhance the skill and capacity of people in rural areas.
“We trained at least 20 persons in each community to handle the projects and we have disbursed a total of N67 million for the execution of the projects,” he said.
On why only 15 local government areas were involved out of the 31 local government areas, of the state, he explained that before the programme commenced, all the local government councils were sensitised on the projects.
The general manager explained that only 15 councils had shown interest in participating at the moment.
“For a local government area to benefit, it must show expression of interest through writing and be willing to contribute 10 per cent counterpart funding.”
He said that before funds were released, the agency sensitised communities and identified projects they wanted in their areas.
Akpan said that the project selection process was always community-driven.
“Our facilitators only assist the communities to identify the projects but the communities are the originators of such projects,” he added.
Akpan said that the establishment of the agency was aimed at bringing development to the grassroots and reducing youths restiveness.
He commended the state government for paying its 2013 counterpart funds of N100 million for the projects to the World Bank.
