RSUST Plans Course In Space Technology
The Rivers State University of Science and Technology Nkpolu, Port Harcourt would commence basic subjects in Space Technology in the next Academic Session.
The Director, Institute of Geosciences and Space Technology of the University, Prof. Songo Cliford Teme who disclosed this last Thursday during an exhibition organised by the institute as part of its 19th – 23rd convocation ceremony said the introduction of Space Technology subjects would further propel the school to meet her target in the area of Science and Technological education.
Prof. Teme noted that the institute is the first in Space Science Technology in Nigeria, explaining that the school is currently running an exchange programme with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. (UNN) in Space Technology.
The don noted that the institution which was established for Science and Technological Education has one out of the mine professors in the nation Space Committee which has been in charge of the Space Agency in the country.
He disclosed that for the University to run the programme successfully, it has received some equipment from Japan and other countries.
According to him, the institution recently received some space technology equipment that would monitor the earth for 24 hours.
The equipment had already been installed at the top of the University Library and takes record for 24 hours in a day,” he said.
Prof. Teme also said the exhibition has given the department the opportunity to showcase its potential, stating that the 9 member committee were able to launch the satellites in the space explaining that the committee were left out in the Nicom satellite which is missing.
He said the Institution is developing in the area of Environmental Science and Space Technology, as he commended Dr. Ipalibo Harry for work on biofertiliser which he said if produced in commercial quantity would improve food production in the country.
The Don noted that research conducted revealed that bioferliliser has more nutrient than the inorganic ferliliser, adding that the school has concluded its work, it is left for the government to do the rest.
