Dame Amaechi Hosts Councillors
Wife of Rivers State Governor, Dame Judith Amaechi, has charged female councilors in the twenty-one local government councils of Rivers State to rise up to the challenges of making good byelaws.
Mrs. Amaechi stated this at the weekend while playing host to over 40 elected councilors in the twenty-one of the twenty-three council areas of the state.
She said the election of the female councilors and chairman of Ogu/Bolo local government area was as a result of the women agitation for 35 per cent affirmative action and gender policy of the state Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi, as well as the People’s Democratic Party manifestoes.
The governor’s wife stated that gender democracy is working in Rivers State as evident in the number of elected councilors and members of women already appointed to the State Executive Council.
According to her, “we are glad that we are feeling and seeing changes as evident in the number of female councilors, chairman, state legislators to federal lawmakers as well as those holding appointments in cabinet”.
She said that the time has come for women to rise up and prove that they possess the enormous capability to be given more assignment.
“You must show that you can do it, prove that women are good managers to enable you have a platform to lobby more.”
She advised them against flexing muscles with the chairmen, a situation she said, may retard development of the people.
“Please I am advising you against competition and unhealthy rivalry with your chairmen; it may not be in the interest of the people”.
Mrs. Amaechi enjoined them to show love among themselves.
Also speaking, the wife of the PDP chairman, Rivers State, Mrs. Christiana Duke, advised the female councilors to be good ambassadors of change.
Speaking on behalf of the female lawmakers, chairman of Ogu/Bolo local governments, Mrs. Maureen Tamuno, pledged their determination to join the men in fast tracking development at the grassroots and thanked the first lady for finding them worthy of representing the women. She also thanked Rivers people for the mandate given to them to serve.
It will be recalled that local government elections were conducted in twenty-one of the twenty-three council areas of the state.
