SPDC Builds Marine Engineering Lab For RSUST
The Shell Petroleum
Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC) has restated its commitment towards improving the quality of education in Nigeria.
The Managing Director of the company, Mr. Mutiu Somonu said this at the ground breaking for marine engineering laboratory at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) Port Harcourt.
Mr. Somonu also said that inline with the company’s desire to foster a mutually beneficial relationship with the university, a complete and integrated set of marine hydrodynamic ware simulation equipment valued at N100 million was also donated to the management.
The Managing Director who as represented by the General Manager, Sustainable Development, Mr. Nedo Osayande said that, the move was to support teaching, research and learning in the Department Marine of Engineering.
According to him, the ceremony is a further demonstration of SPDC’s desire to enhance educational development in Nigeria and strengthen the quality of marine research and teaching in RSUST.
“Other strides by the company in the educational sector include, the endowment of eight professional chair in eight universities as well as the awards of scholarship to over 4,000 university undergraduates, “he added.
He expressed hope that the project would be completed soon, with the active support from the university.
Responding, the vice chancellor of the university, Professor B.B. Fakae described the move as a testimony to the academic excellence of the university.
Prof Fakae also said that the project would boost the teaching and learning of marine engineering in the institution.

Education Commissioner Seeks media collaboration in Rivers
The River State Commissioner for Education, Dr Peters Nwagor has called on media practitioners in Rivers State to deploy their various communication platforms toward promoting government programmes and policies aimed at achieving sustainable development in the education sector.
