Nigeria, Three Others To Host 2015 AFCON
As Morocco has refused to host the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in January over Ebola concerns, the tournament could take place in four different countries.
While CAF President Issa Hayatou is strongly determined to stick to the original schedule and maintains AFCON 2015 from January 17 to February 8, the continental body is aware of the difficulties involved in the organisation of such an event in two months.
And in order to overcome this problem, CAF is allegedly contemplating the idea of choosing four different countries to host the four different groups of the competition, including Algeria.
However, such a format raises major questions marks as regards the venues for the opening game, knockout stage and the tournament’s final, and involves many logistical issues.
As for potential hosts, Angola, Gabon and Nigeria seem to have left the door open to a back-up solution. But with the qualifying campaign still going on, what will happen if one or more of the designated hosts do not book their ticket for the finals?
But one thing is certain ahead of CAF crucial meeting in Cairo this Tuesday. Issa Hayatou and his Executive Committee are going to hit Morocco and hit them hard.
