College Alumni to Raise N250m For Alma Mater
The Queen College Old Girls Association has pledged to raise more than N250 million to tackle the infrastructural challenges facing the 97-year-old school.
The association made the pledge at a dinner organised in honour of Mrs Modupe Ladipo, an old girl, who was appointed the Principal of the school in June.
The Coordinator of the event, Mrs Amina Gidado, in an interview with newsmen in Lagos, said that the intervention of the alumni had become necessary.
“Our target is to raise at least N250 million in six months. Most of the school’s infrastructure had gone down over the years and government cannot do everything.
That is why we seek to carry out a major transformation of the school which played a major role in laying the foundation upon which we thrive today,” Gidado said.
She said that the Principal had been asked to submit a list of priority projects.
“We are very ready to give the principal total support in order to bring the school back to its prime position as the country’s foremost all-girls school.
The president of the association, Mrs Ore-Oluwa Odunuga, said that the coming on board of an old girl as the principal was long overdue, adding that it was one of the best things to have ever happened to the school in a long time.
“My joy is that collectively, we will now do all we can to ensure that our Alma Mater is once again taken to its prime position as the number one all-girls college in the country.”
Meanwhile, the principal said that she was humbled by the support she was getting from the association, adding that she would do everything to justify the confidence reposed in her.
Ladipo said that one of her major challenges at the moment was that of inadequate classrooms.
The River State Commissioner for Education, Dr Peters Nwagor has called on media practitioners in Rivers State to deploy their various communication platforms toward promoting government programmes and policies aimed at achieving sustainable development in the education sector. Dr. Nwagor made the appeal when members of the Etche Ethnic Practicing Journalists (EEPJ) paid him a courtesy visit in Office in Port Harcourt. The Commissioner emphasized the strategic role of the media in shaping public perception, promoting government initiatives, and supporting policies capable of improving the quality of education and human capital development in the state. According to him, constructive media engagement remains essential in creating public awareness on educational reforms, students’ welfare, infrastructural improvements, and other interventions being implemented by the state government.
