‘Nigeria’ll Overcome Odds In Maputo’
Former Commonwealth long jump champion, Yusuf Ali, has urged the National Sports Commission (NSC) to ensure that preparations for major competitions such as the All Africa Games were not unduly delayed.
He said that the customary late preparation for major competitions tended to deny the country the opportunity to attain its true potential in sports.
Ali told newsmen in Lagos that in spite of the delay, the Nigerian contingent would strive to do the nation proud in Mozambique.
“The NSC must commence early preparations of Team Nigeria at all times and discard the snail pace approach which had constantly stunted the nation’s aspirations in sports.
“We should not take things for granted and feel that we can always get away with our usual last minute preparations for major competitions,’’ he said.
The former national record holder, who is currently engaged as a coach by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), however, said that preparations for the Games were already in progress.
Ali said that the recent cancellation of foreign training tours by the new Sports Minister, Yusuf Suleiman, should be taken in good faith.
According to him, it is an opportunity to further develop sporting facilities in the country.
“Now that the anticipated foreign training tours for the AAG have been cancelled by the minister, we have to concentrate as we put finishing touches to our preparations.
“Foreign tours or not; Team Nigeria will still perform excellently at the AAG,’’ the former Commonwealth champion said.
