Delta Cautions On Admission Policies
The Delta State Gov ernment has cautioned owners of mission schools in the state against applying discriminatory policies in the admission of students.
The state Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Prof. Patrick Muoboghare, gave the warning at an interactive session with chief inspectors of education, the proprietors and principals of the affected schools.
Muoboghare advised that indigenes of the state be accorded the greater percentage of admission quota but warned against discrimination on the basis of religion, tribe, social, economic or physical status.
He also said that the handing over of the schools to the missionaries by the government was done in good faith for the overall development of the education sector in the state and directed the schools to have a clear policy on in-service training for their teachers and to join the contributory pension scheme.
He charged them to adhere to recruitment standard of employing only teachers with a minimum of Nigeria Certificate of Education (NCE) and ensure that the teachers register with the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria.
Muoboghare advised the proprietors to ensure regular payment of the schools’ annual registration fees, establish boards of governors to run the schools and not to admit students for certificate courses.
In their remarks, the representatives of the various missions, including the Catholic, Anglican and Baptist, commended the state government for returning the schools to their original owners.
They urged the government to gazette the hand-over and to offer grants to the schools.
