LG Polls: Wike Orders Restriction Of Vehicular, Human Movement In Rivers …Police Deploy 17,500 Officers

Published

on

The Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, has declared restriction on vehicular and human movements, within and out of the state from the midnight of today till 5pm on Saturday, when the state council polls would have been over.
The governor, in a state broadcast, yesterday, said the restriction of movement is necessitated by conduct of the State Local Government Election by Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RVSIEC) fixed for Saturday, April 17, 2021.
“Consequently, vehicular and human movements, within and out of the state and the local government areas is hereby totally restricted from the midnight of Friday, April 16, 2021 to and until the end of polling at 5pm on Saturday, April 17, 2021, except for persons and vehicles strictly on essential duties with genuine and valid identifications.
“The security agencies have been directed to strictly enforce the restriction on human and vehicular movements and arrest and prosecute any person who dares to violate this ban. I have been briefed, and received assurances from the RVSIEC that it is fully prepared and ready not only to conduct but also to ensure that polling is hitch-free, fair and credible.”
Wike said he has been briefed and received assurances from the state’s security high command about the state of preparedness of the security agencies to provide adequate and effective security at all the polling units and collation centres to guarantee safe, secure and peaceful election.
He urged voters to conduct themselves peacefully throughout the election and refrain from any act or behaviour that could cause a threat to the peaceful conduct of the election as election can never be a do or die affair; neither is it worth the blood of anybody.
“Furthermore, the security agencies have clear directives to arrest and deal decisively with any person or group of persons, no matter how highly placed, who attempts to prevent the peaceful and orderly conduct of the election or compromise its integrity in any way.
“We call on community leaders and the general public to be vigilant and promptly report every suspicious movement and or illegal activity around polling units and collation centres in their localities to the security agencies for immediate action.”
The governor explained that Saturday’s election is necessitated by the fact that the three-year tenure of the incumbent chairmen and councillors of all the 23 local government councils will expire and terminate on June 15, 2021.
“As a government that believes in the practice and consolidation of democracy, and in fulfillment of our constitutional duty to ensure the sustenance of democratically elected local government councils in the state, we have since decided never to run our local government system with caretaker committees, except in inevitably justifiable circumstances.
“It is against this background that this election has been fixed to once again give our people the opportunity to effectively participate in the process of electing and constituting the next set of chairmen and councillors to administer the 23 local government councils.”
He assured every resident of the state that Saturday’s election shall hold as scheduled throughout the state in all the 4,442 polling units, 319 wards and 23 local government areas as the state government has given every necessary logistical support and enablement to both the RVSIEC and the security agencies to ensure that the election is free, fair and credible.
“I am pleased to note that with 17 different political parties participating and appearing on the ballot, our people have truly been given the opportunity to responsibly exercise their freedom of choice based on the manifestoes of the parties and the campaign promises of the candidates.

2027: Be Politically Neutral, Fubara Tasks Traditional Rulers

Published

on

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has charged traditional rulers in the State to maintain neutrality, ensure fairness and uphold peace in their domains as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.

Fubara gave the charge on Wednesday while declaring open the 126th,  127th and 128th Combined Quarterly Meeting of the Rivers State Traditional Rulers Council, in Port Harcourt.

The governor said the primary function of traditional rulers is to administer justice and ensure fairness, saying their conduct must not lead to division and unmanageable crises.

“Let me therefore, request, if that is the right word to use, that please, as we are entering into this political season actively, everyone should ensure that your conduct promoted  peace in your place. Your actions should not be what would lead to the division and multiple crisis that we cannot manage as a government.

“I  think with that, we can all live as one and we can also continue to make this progress that we are trying with all our mind, our body and our soul, to ensure that we deliver  to our dear State,” he said.

Fubara urged  the royal fathers to abide by the oath and constitution they swore to before ascending their respective stools,  in the interest of stability and progress of the State.

He also enjoined them  to set aside individual sentiments and place the interest of Rivers State above personal considerations, noting that this principle has guided his own day-to-day governance of the State.

“I want to enjoin everyone to keep aside issues of individual sentiments and ensure that the interest of our state supersedes whatever thing that we have in our mind. This is not just what I’m saying here, it is what I’ve also practiced and displayed in my day-to-day life in the governance of our dear State,” he said.

On the appeal for improved welfare  for traditional rulers, the governor clarified that the delay in actualising some of the requests they made  in the past was not from the government but from the inability of the Council to put its house in order.

Fubara explained that the issue of stipends paid to the traditional rulers by the local government councils,  was a statutory benefit provided for in the constitution and not what a state governor can change by mere verbal   pronouncements.

He assured that he remains a man of his word and will fulfill his promises  to the traditional rulers before leaving office, next year.

He reaffirmed his respect for the traditional institution as custodians of culture and the closest link to the people, thanking them for their prayers and support.

The governor urged the royal fathers to ensure that the combined quarterly meeting  featured fruitful deliberations that will strengthen peace and development in the State.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers and Paramount Ruler of Apara Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Eze Chike Amadi Worlu Wodo,  expressed  profound gratitude to the State Government for its efforts in  maintaining a cordial relationship with the traditional institution.

Wodo highlighted the importance of traditional rulers in conflict resolution, noting that their closeness to the people places them in a strategic position to mediate in  disputes involving chieftaincy matters, family disputes and land ownership in their respective communities.

The royal father drew the attention of the State Government to some  challenges affecting the performance of the traditional institution, particularly the lack of official utility vehicles and logistical support needed to discharge its responsibilities effectively.

He also appealed for improved monthly stipends and better welfare provisions to reflect prevailing economic realities.
