Diri Tasks N’ Delta Group On Non-Partisanship
Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has urged the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) not to dabble into partisan politics, but remain focused on protecting the collective interest of the Niger Delta region.
He stated this when the PANDEF Executive led by its Chairman, Senator Emmanuel Ibok-Essien, paid him a courtesy visit in Government House, Yenagoa, recently.
The governor commended the efforts of leaders and other stakeholders of PANDEF, particularly elder statesman, Edwin Clark, for showing leadership over the years on issues concerning the region.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, Diri acknowledged that PANDEF had made commendable efforts towards the growth and development of the region.
”PANDEF is an apolitical body. I advise that it remains so in order for its integrity to be intact.
“PANDEF is a voice in the Niger Delta in Nigeria, and it is contributing to the growth and development of our region. We appreciate the leaders because of the role they play in stabilising the Niger Delta and the Nigerian state.
“We also appreciate our elder statesman, Pa Edwin Clark, who has given leadership to PANDEF.
“Our leaders have been at the forefront of our struggles and agitations, raising the issues from time to time. So far, we have not achieved our desired goals, but we must continue to agitate for what rightly belongs to us”, Governor Diri said.
The Bayelsa’s Chief Executive also assured PANDEF of his administration’s continued support and directed the Ministry of Lands and Housing to provide a befitting accommodation for the body’s headquarters in Bayelsa.
“The Niger Delta should have a voice working for us at the national level. The forum needs to have synergy with governors.
“We used to have the BRACED (Bayelsa Rivers Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Edo and Delta) Commission, which is comatose, but God willing we will bring it back on stream”, Governor Diri added.
Earlier, the PANDEF National Chairman, Senator Emmanuel Ibok-Essien, commended the Governor on his administration’s impactful infrastructural development strides and for supporting Bayelsans, particularly during the floods.
Ibok-Essien, who said a 16-point agenda was presented to President Muhammadu Buhari, also highlighted a number of issues bedeviling the Niger Delta region, saying they include, the plight of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), National Water Bill, true federalism, and oil pollution.
A minute silence was observed in honour of the former PANDEF national chairman, late Air Commodore Idongesit Nkanga (rtd) and the late Deputy National Chairman, Chief Francis Doukpola, respectively.

Make God Your Anchor To Fulfill Destiny, Cleric Charges Christians … As Jaja Marks 70th Birthday
The Lead Pastor at Jesus Appointed People’s Bible Church, Ozogbe, Ikwerrengwo-Etche, in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State, Pastor Promise Nwaelele, has urged Christians to make God the anchor of their lives in whatever position they find themselves, in order to attain the destinies set for them by God.
Pastor Nwaelele, who gave the charge recently in a sermon he preached at the 70th birthday anniversary thanksgiving service of Sir Donald Michael Jaja, a veteran journalist in Rivers State, said this is because any genuine child of God is a permanent target for destabilization and destruction by the devil.
Taking his text from the Bible book of Mark 4:16-17, the preacher stated that fulfilment in life for a child of God required faith, obedience to God’s word, humility and grace to withstand trials and temptations.
According to him, temptations and afflictions are bound to happen in the lives of those who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
“No wonder the Bible said that those that endure till the end shall be saved”, he said.
The Clergyman said God prospers believers who are humble, not proud and conceited, and leads them to destiny fulfilment.
“David said in Psalm 51:17, that the sacrifices acceptable to God are a broken spirit, not an impatient or proud spirit”, the preacher said.
He called on Christians not to allow persecutions and afflictions to sway them from the love and blessings of Jesus Christ.
On his part, Jaja, a seasoned Journalist who retired as an Acting Editor of the Rivers State Government-owned The Tide Newspaper, gave thanks to God for honouring him by giving him the grace of attaining 70 years.
“I cannot capture what the good Lord has done for me in my entire life in this fleeting moment of thanksgiving. But, I know that without Him, I wouldn’t have been who I am today, in all spheres. Therefore, my joy knows no bounds as I give thanks to my creator today, alongside my family. Praise be His holy name”, Jaja said.
