Nigeria @62: ‘FG Social Investment Programme Shouldn’t Be Politicised’
The Chairman of Andoni Local Government Council, Barrister Erastus Awortu, has criticised the alleged politicisation of the Social Investment Programmes on poverty alleviation by the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government.
Awortu raised the concern while speaking at an occasion by the council to mark Nigeria’s 62nd Independence Anniversary in Andoni in reaction to President Muhammadu Buhari’s Independence Day broadcast.
He said hunger does not segregate, as it affects everyone regardless of the political party the person belongs to.
Awortu urged those who are privileged to hold any public position or responsibility as it affects Andoni to use it to better the lot of the people regardless of the political divide.
“The President talked about the Social Investment Programme of the Federal Government in his Independence Day’s broadcast. The N-power and so on, I don’t know whether the N-power is still working or not, there was a time they were deploying teachers to schools, I don’t think it is still working.
“The Social Investment Programme shouldn’t be politicised, if you are in APC and the APC, and government is bringing development to your area do not hide it away from your people, our blood does not know PDP it does not know APC, hunger does not know party. Support your people with whatever position you have so that our place will be developed just like other places we see”.
Awortu also said the issue of insecurity was now a thing of the past in Andoni because the youths have embraced peace and development.
He expressed delight that work is going on smoothly on the Andoni section of the Unity Road without any disturbance due to the prevailing peace and stability in Andoni.
“In Andoni, today, the issue of insecurity is a thing of the past, our youths have all come to the realisation that they don’t need to be fighting, and they have known that they were fighting for nothing, they have all embraced peace and development now.
“You can see the contractors handling the Andoni section of the Unity Road are working without any disturbance, development is now coming to Andoni”.
The Andoni council boss also tasked teachers in Andoni on diligence and effectiveness to work.
He urged them to show a sense of patriotism in the discharge of their duties as public servants.
“Our teachers, please come to the classroom and teach, we will support you as much as our resources can carry”.
On the state of the nation, Awortu enjoined the people of Andoni to keep hope alive for a better Nigeria rather than despair and being despondent in spite of the many challenges bedevilling the country.
“If we believe in this country we have to be positive, we have to believe that things must change, we have to believe that Nigeria will be a place people will dream to be”
The 62nd Independence Anniversary Celebration in Andoni held in Ngo Town was well attended by traditional rulers and chiefs, councillors of the 9th Legislative Assembly of Andoni, political appointees, community leaders, heads of security agencies in Andoni, heads of public schools in Andoni, corps members and students.
The event featured march pass by secondary and primary school students, corps members and paramilitary officials, culminatingin the presentation of prizes to winners of the march pass.
