NSC Links Trade Imbalance In W/A To Composition Of Sub-Sahara African Trade
Worried by the slow flow of trade in West Africa, Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) has said that the composition of West African Sub-Sahara African trade was responsible for trade imbalance in the sub-region.
NSC said the Sub-Sahara Africa trade contribute only 6percent of global trade
The council also said over 70percent of export cargoes are primary commodities, while majority of imports are consumer goods.
Executive Secretary, Chief Executive Officer, NSC, Emmanuel Jime, stated this in Port Harcourt during a one-day sensitisation programme on the mandate of Shippers Council as ports economic regulator, with the Theme, “Port Economic Regulator NSC in Focus”.
Represented by South-South Regional Director, Mr Glory Onojeda, Jime called for the need to develop the nation’s industrial base so as to balance the trade and boost the nation’s economy.
Describing the port as critical infrastructure, the secretary advocated the need to make our trade competitive and guard against monopoly and free for numerous players to enter and exit on order for its users to enjoy the benefits of lower prices and efficient service delivery associated with competition.
NSC, he said, was mandated to creates an effective regulatory regime at Nigerian Ports for the control of tariff, rates, charges and other related economic service’s
NSC, Jime said in performing its mandates, developed and implemented a strategic plan which is assessed and reviewed every three years.
Jime further said NSC goal is to promote effective regulations that would make the transportation sector efficient and contribute positively to the development of the nation economy”
Describing the maritime industry as a catalyst to the nation’s economic development, maritime transportation and its related activities influence the growth of industries directly or indirectly and exerts great influence on the general price of goods and service, Jime called for support and collaboration with all team players to achieve its goals.

RSG INAUGURATES ARMED FORCES REMEMBRANCE DAY COMMITTEE
The Rivers State Government has inaugurated a Central Planning Committee to organize the celebration of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) in the State.
The committee was formally inaugurated by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba in Port Harcourt, last Thursday.
Dr Anabraba who also serves as Chairman of the Committee
highlighted the State Government’s deep appreciation for the sacrifices of Nigeria’s fallen heroes who laid down their lives for the nation’s peace and unity.
“These heroes have given their lives for the security and peace of our nation and deserve to be celebrated. The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is an opportunity to show our gratitude for their sacrifice,” he said.
Dr. Anabraba further extended recognition to all Security Agencies in the State, emphasizing the importance of the event in appreciating their contributions to national security and sovereignty.
The annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed on January 15 across the country is dedicated to remember Nigeria’s departed soldiers and honouring the nation’s veterans.
