Church Decries Poor State Of Economy
The Diocese of Port Harcourt of the Methodist Church Nigeria has expressed concern over the declining state of the Nigeria’s economy and the high rate of inflation in the country.
The diocese said this in a communique issued at the end of its 41st Synod held at 41 Egede Street, Port Harcourt.
The diocese also condemned the rate of corruption, indiscipline and criminality in the country, particularly the rampant kidnapping and banditry across the nation as well as the recent shooting and bombing of the Kaduna train.
The communiqué, which was jointly signed by the Archbishop/Bishop of the Diocese,Most Rev. Emmanuel Udofia, and the Synod Secretary,Very Rev. Emeka Haniel, also decried the practice of increased borrowing to fund ghost or non-existent projects in the nation at a time the general election was at the corner, and urged Christians to be prayerful during the forthcoming elections.
The church also urged members and the entire Christian community to be security conscious, while the government should step up effort to check insecurity in the country.
It described the ongoing ASUU strike as a very painful experience to parents and their wards in the universities, and urged both the Federal Government and the striking lecturers to reconsider their stands in the interest of the nation.
The synod also commended the Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike for his giant infrastructure development, which has made the state the pride of the South-South region, and urged other governors to emulate it.
The church further called on the Federal Government to expedite action to protect Nigerian citizens in Russia and Ukraine in the midst of the ongoing war.

RSG INAUGURATES ARMED FORCES REMEMBRANCE DAY COMMITTEE
The Rivers State Government has inaugurated a Central Planning Committee to organize the celebration of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) in the State.
The committee was formally inaugurated by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba in Port Harcourt, last Thursday.
Dr Anabraba who also serves as Chairman of the Committee
highlighted the State Government’s deep appreciation for the sacrifices of Nigeria’s fallen heroes who laid down their lives for the nation’s peace and unity.
“These heroes have given their lives for the security and peace of our nation and deserve to be celebrated. The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is an opportunity to show our gratitude for their sacrifice,” he said.
Dr. Anabraba further extended recognition to all Security Agencies in the State, emphasizing the importance of the event in appreciating their contributions to national security and sovereignty.
The annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed on January 15 across the country is dedicated to remember Nigeria’s departed soldiers and honouring the nation’s veterans.
