Falcons, Canada Clash In Double-Header Friendly
African champions Super Falcons will face Canada in a double-header friendly tagged ‘Celebration Tour’ next month.
Both games will be played in Vancouver and Langford.
The Nigerians, who are already through to the 2022 Women’s African Cup of Nations in Morocco, will first take on Canada April 8 at BC Place in Vancouver, while the second leg holds three days later at the Starlight Stadium in Langford.
Tidesports source reports that the friendly is in honour of Christine Sinclair, who led Canada to an Olympic gold medal win at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in August 2021.
An Olympic gold medalist, two-time Olympic bronze medalist, CONCACAF champion and 14-time winner of the Canada Soccer Player of The Year award, Sinclair is the world’s all-time leader for international goals scored for men or women with 188 goals, and is one of the most-capped active international footballers.
The celebration was originally planned for April 2020, but was postponed on account of the global pandemic COVID-19.
The two-match series will also mark a farewell to Stephanie Labbe, who will wrap up her professional and international career as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
Canada’s coach, Bev Priestman believes the Falcons will offer his side a good test as they prepare for their World and Olympic qualifiers.
“We look forward to reconnecting with our Canadian fans on the west coast for these two home matches,” Priestman said.
“These two matches against Nigeria in Vancouver and Langford will also provide us with great experience as we continue to prepare for this summer’s qualifiers to both the FIFA World Cup and Olympic Games.

Iwobi Optimistic On S’Eagles Qualification
Iwobi spoke to Tidesports source ahead of Nigeria’s crunch playoff semi-final against Gabon on Thursday, November 13, in Rabat, Morocco.
The 28-year-old was reacting to Nigeria’s shaky World Cup qualifying campaign that saw the Eagles finish second in Group C behind South Africa’s Bafana Bafana.
“We’ve managed to rescue ourselves from the dead,” Iwobi told Tidesports source.
We know we have the players and the abilities to compete against any other country in the world.”
The Fulham star pointed to Nigeria’s star power, highlighting African Footballer of the Year winners Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen as proof of the squad’s quality.
“We have last year’s African best player (Ademola Lookman), the year before that (Victor Osimhen),” he said.
“It’ll be a shame if we don’t make it, but we have a lot of confidence. We just have to prove it to ourselves.”
Nigeria’s path to the United States, Canada and Mexico has been turbulent, with two coaches departing during the early stages of qualifying before Éric Chelle steadied the ship to steer the Super Eagles into November’s CAF playoffs.
Four nations from the continent – Nigeria, Cameroon, DR Congo and Gabon – will vie for a solitary spot to compete in next March’s inter-confederation playoffs, with a view to joining the already nine qualified African nations at the Finals.
It would mark Iwobi’s second appearance at the World Cup Finals and the Super Eagles’ first since the 2018 edition of the competition.
Back then, Iwobi featured in all three games as Nigeria was knocked out in the group stage.
