Nigeria’s Maritime Sector Managed By Non-Professionals -MWUN …Urges FG To Strengthen Maritime Laws
The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Rivers State Chapter, has traced the problem militating against the maritime sector to its management by non professionals.
The union noted that the sector has been mostly manned by non professionals and called on the federal government to appoint core marine professionals to pilot the affairs of the sector to achieve results.
Comrade Harry Waite, Trustee Dockworkers, MWUN, Rivers state Chapter, stated this while reflecting on the performance of the sector in the last 61 years of Nigeria’s independence.
He noted that the sector rather than getting improved, was retrogressing, generating low revenue to the national economy.
“We are supposed to have improved, but the problem with the Nigerian maritime sector is the managers, the management of the sector by non professionals and politicians.
“We don’t have the square peg in the square hole, the managers in the sector are not living up to expectations as far as the maritime sector is concerned.
“Non professionals are managing the sector, causing a lot of confusion everywhere with non profiting policies”, he said.
Comrade Harry insisted that Nigeria as a nation does not have a vibrant maritime sector to compete favourably with its global counterparts.
“We don’t have a vibrant maritime sector in Nigeria, professionals should be allowed to manage the sector to achieve results”, he insisted.
Meanwhile, the union has also called on the Federal Government to strengthen maritime laws to curb piracy and all forms of criminality in the nation’s territorial waters.
Chairman, MWUN, Rivers State chapter, Comrade Jonah Jumbo, made the call in an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt, at the weekend.
He said the maritime laws should be strengthened in such a way that any act of criminality that resorts to death should be made a capital punishment.
Jonah noted that the activities of the pirates had negatively affected the nation’s socio-economic lives as shipowners and investors are scared to invest in the sector.
He said most investors had relocated to neighboring countries for safety due to insecurity, adding that this has worsened the unemployment rate in the country.
According to him, nothing is happening in our state waterways, even in the country maritime sector due to act of piracy and sea robbery.
He called on the Federal Government, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency,(NIMASA) and the Nigerian Navy to beef up security in the nation’s waterways to end piracy.
“Our waterways are not safe for navigation, there is incessant attacks by pirates, abduction of crew members at Gulf of Guinea (GOG) everyday, thereby scaring off shipowners and crew members to invest in our waters.
“The security situation in our waterways is very bad. No where is safe and secured in our waters. Our sea routes, especially in Rivers State communities such as Bonny, Kula, Andoni, Bakana and Bille are not safe for marine business”, he said.
