Elechi Beach Residents Raise Alarm Over Erosion Threat
Some residents of Elechi Beach community in Port Harcourt City of Rivers State Local Government Area have raised alarm over the threat to the beach by erosion.
Some of the residents who spoke in an interview with The Tide blamed the situation on the collapse of the government gutter built some years ago.
Noting that the collapse of the gutter has made water to run down the beach with high intensity during high rain falls, the residents called on the government to repair the gutter, stressing that the situation has affected more than 20 houses already .
A resident, Richard Macaulay said the sloppy nature of the community has led to waters rushing down from the upland during rainfalls.
He said the decision to call for help from the government was because of the dangerous dimension the situation has taken.
Also speaking, another resident, Fidelis Brown said water washing down from the upland has affected many houses in the community.
“Whenever it rains water pressure from upland usually affect the houses”, he said.
Another resident, Joy Tonye said the collapsed central gutter had made water from Mile 1 and other places to rush down the area with force and intensity during high rainfalls affecting houses .
She said the sooner government repaires the gutters the better it would be for the settlement.
Also speaking, another resident, Blessing John said some houses have started falling.
She said the situation is affecting some high tension poles in the area.
