Geoscientists Move To Unravel Causes Of Soot
The Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (MNAS), has called for more resources to determine the causes of the black soot in parts of Rivers State.
National President of the society, Alabo Charlesye D. Charles said this at media briefing in Port Harcourt.
The briefing was part of activities to mark the 31st induction ceremony of the new president of this society.
He said illegal refining of crude oil may not be the only cause of the soot, adding that more researchers are needed to determine other causes with a view to finding solutions to it.
The NMGS President also blamed climate change on the perennial flooding in parts of the country.
Alabo Charles said relevant agencies must work out ways of ending the continuous emission of green house gases into the atmosphere.
The NMGS president also said the incessant farmers and herders clashes will be control if the issue of climate change is addressed adding that herders are moving South ward in search of water for their flock.
He also called on the people of the Niger Delta not to kill themselves over the issue of resource control as the Constitution presently does not guarantee resources control.
Alabo Charles said the NMGS which is one of the oldest professional bodies in Nigeria was formed to promote the interest of mining engineers in the country.
He also said the ceremony was the fourth in Port Harcourt since the formation of the society and disclosed plans by the society to hold an international conference and exhibition in March next year in Port Harcourt.
Alabo Charles said issues to be discussed at the conference will include that of the soot and sustaining rural development in the country.
