COVID-19: Mpigi Lauds Wike’s Proactive Approach …Pledges N8.5m Support
The Senator representing Rivers South East District in the National Assembly, Senator Barinada Mpigi, has lauded Governor Nyesom Wike for taking proactive steps to stem the spread of the deadly Coronavirus disease in Rivers State.
Mpigi, who disclosed this during a chat with newsmen appealed to his constituents, especially the people of Eleme not to panic following the siting of the Covid-19 treatment centre there, urging them to take precautionary measures to avoid being infected.
“I want to thank the Rivers State Governor, His Excellency, Nyesom Wike for being proactive in checking the spread of the Coronavirus Disease in Rivers State. The isolation centre in Eleme could have been anywhere else. But now that it is in Eleme, the virus will not jump from the position to people’s houses.
“I want to assure the people of Eleme and the people of Ogale especially, that this thing is like a centre. The hospital is ongoing and the people that are working there are human beings. They should be peaceful and calm. Sometimes things like this happen and it may be for their benefit.
“For them to allow such a centre to be sited there definitely more development will come back to Eleme,” the Senator stated.
Mpigi also promised to provide logistic support to the Rivers State Covid-19 team and the seven local government areas that make up his senatorial district, even as he solicited more support for the State Government.
“I am calling on everyone living and doing business in Rivers State to see how we can support the Governor and to that effect, I will donate the sum of N5million to the Covid-19 team working tirelessly in Rivers State. To my very powerful teams that are working across the seven LGAs of my Senatorial District as they say ‘charity begins at home. I am also donating a sum of N3.5million making about N500, 000 per LGA.
“These sums have been made available and will be handed over formally on the 30th March, 2020 to all these people so far mentioned,” the federal lawmaker said.

LP Crisis: Ex-NWC Member Dumps Dumps Abure Faction
Mr Ojukwu, who recently returned to the interim National Working Committee led by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman, noted that the party had 34 elected members in the House of Representatives, eight Senators, and 80 members at the state Houses of Assembly after the 2023 general elections.
“Now we lost all of them,” he said. “I don’t think we have as many as five members in the National Assembly.”
The former national officer of the LP talked to journalists in Abuja and said he chose to join the caretaker committee led by Senator Nenadi-Usman because they are now the officially recognized leaders of the Party.
“I chose to work with the caretaker committee to help save the Labour Party, for the benefit of the party. I also want to use this chance to ask my colleagues at the national, state, and local government levels to come together and help rebuild our party.
“Another election is around the corner. We lost everything we have. They have left to other political parties. So I’ll reach out to all my friends in the other group to get together and work on making this party stronger again.
“The caretaker committee has formed a reconciliation committee. Let’s come together and talk so that we can restore the first opposition political party in Nigeria.”
Mr Ojukwu, who was part of the Julius Abure’s group, said there are no more factions in the LP.
He added, “There is a court ruling, and since it is valid, the right people are in the correct positions.”
He urged Barr Abure and others to drop the legal cases they have filed because they are not helping the party.
“Litigations are killing political parties”, he said. “They’ve seen many political parties disappear because of legal battles, and the Labor Party is losing support every day, which makes me feel sad.”
Mr Ojukwu said he did not think joining the Senator Nenadi-Usman’s NWC was a betrayal of the Abure group, describing himself as “the oxygen” of that faction.
“I’m with this group because of the verdict. But I never betrayed anybody. Rather, I was betrayed,” he added.
