Mechanic’s Death: Redeploy Rivers CP, CSOs Tell IG

A coalition of civil society organisations has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Muhammed Adamu, to redeploy the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mustapha Dandaura, over the death of a mechanic, Ikwunado Chima, in a police cell after he was arrested alongside four of his friends.
The CSOs also urged the Police Service Commission to terminate appointments of the members of the Eagle Crack team involved in the reported torture of Chima and four others: Ifeanyi Onyekwere, Victor Ogbonna, Osaze Friday and Ifeanyi Osuji.
It would be recalled that Chima and four of his friends were arrested on December 19, 2019, after being labelled armed robbers and cultists.
Chima was said to have died after undergoing tremendous torture by some personnel of the Eagle Crack team of the Nigeria Police Force.
They also demanded that the entire Eagle Crack Unit of the Police Force be dissolved, adding that those responsible for Chima’s torture and death be immediately prosecuted because they acted against the Police Act, especially as it relates to the torture of suspects.
Speaking with newsmen in Port Harcourt, yesterday, the leader of the coalition, Mr Enefaa Georgewill, demanded that the PSC should pay for the medical bills of the other victims.
Georgewill, who read out a statement signed by himself and six others, said, “We hereby call on the Police Service Commission of Nigeria to terminate the employment of the members of the ‘Eagle Crack Team’ and dissolve the entire unit. The commission is hereby called upon to turn in the said persons for prosecution as they acted ultra vires the powers given to them by the Police Act.
“We call on the Police Service Commission to pay the medical bills of the victims of the police brutality in this matter and pay them adequate compensation for the violation of their Fundamental Rights guaranteed by the Constitution of Nigeria.
“We call on the Inspector-General of Police to redeploy the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, on the following grounds; the E-crack unit is the Commissioner of Police tactical unit and they are answerable to him.”
