Bayelsa Higher Institutions’ Workers Decry Unpaid Salary
Members of the Higher Institutions Joint Action Committee (HIJAC) in Bayelsa State are lamenting the non-payment of their December 2019 salary by the state government under the outgoing Governor Seriake Dickson.
The State Chairman of HIJAC, Ebaratonbofa Tonwei, told newsmen during a press briefing in Yenagoa yesterday that workers in the seven state-owned higher institutions were in hunger and anguish.
He said they could not celebrate the Christmas and New Year festivities because they did not receive their salary.
Tonwei said it was regrettable that an administration that declared a state of emergency in the education sector was allegedly paying lip service to issues of education and welfare of workers.
According to him, the members of HIJAC would not be able to go to work due to the non-payment of their salary.
Tonwei said, “During the economic recession, we managed with this government. But surprisingly, this government is signing out on a very low note.
“We are calling on this government to, without delay, pay us our December salary. We and our families are not happy. Our children are not smiling. Our dependents are not smiling. We are not smiling.
“At this point, you cannot force the staff of tertiary institutions to go to work.”
Tonwei, therefore, appealed to the state government to pay all staff of the tertiary institutions of learning their wages to end their suffering.
The HIJAC also urged the incoming government of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to place high premium on education, especially tertiary education.
