Prominent traditional rulers, politicians, illustrious sons and daughters of Ekpeye extraction including Law enforcement agents graced the commissioning of Aya-Nembe market by regent of Eze Ekpeye Logbo, His Royal Majesty Eze Dr. Felix Enene Otuwarikpo.
Addressing the mammoth crowd at Anakpor village, the location of the ancient market, Eze Otuwarikpo, who is also Eze Upata Kingdom III, apologised for the failed earlier date, saying it was due to pressing state engagement.
“The visit today is even more appropriate as it coincides with our Ogwu Ekpeye. For that reason, the people of Anakpor should go and cook, we are here for the Ekpeye festival.
“ I will use my oneyear reign as the acting Eze Ekpeye Logbo to revitalise our culture and revive economic activities in the land,” he said.
Eze Otuwarikpo thanked Eze Igbu Igbuduya II His Royal Majesty, Eze Joshua Eyiba for his preparedness in welcoming him alongside the dignitaries to his domain.
Otuwarikpo, who used the occasion to announce his readiness to reinstate the many years war-torn Odhigwe community in Ahoada West Local Government Area, noted that the residents of the community were sacked from home by a neighbouring community in Abual/Odual Local Government Area.
While commissioning the revived market, Dr. Otuwarikpo said, he had approached companies in Ekpeye land to assist in renovating the dilapidated market shades. He charged the people of Ekpeye to take advantage of the market as well as selling and buying on each market day.
Eze Upata sued for love, unity and peace among the people of Ekpeye; reiterating that development could hardly thrive in a disorganised society.
Also speaking, Deputy President General Uzugbani Ekpeye Dr. Nnamdi Obuzor said, his father was also a co-founding member of the Aya-Nembe market over 150 years ago.
Dr. Obuzor described the Aya-Nembe as next to Ahoada market, noting that the Aya-Nembe had served as one of the district headquarters in Ekpeye, created during the administration of l the then Rivers State governor ate Chief Melford Okilo.
Earlier, the host traditional ruler, His royal Majesty Eze Joshua Eyiba Eze Igbu Igbuduya expressed gratitudes for the vision of Eze Otuwarikpo in reviving the moribund market and his indication to revive other sectors.
“I am highly elated on what is on ground in Ekpeye land today; we have professors, doctorate degree holders, etc. which were scarce before,” Eyiba said.
