$9.6bn P&ID Debt: Senate Summons AGF, Others
The Senate has summoned the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice over a verdict by a British Commercial Court, which on August 16 awarded judgement in the sum of $9.6billion against Nigeria over a failed contract between P&ID and the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources in 2010.
The Senate made this resolution, yesterday, at its resumption, following a motion raised by Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, representing Ekiti Central Senatorial District of Ekiti State.
Bamidele directed the AGF, petroleum resources professionals and other relevant agencies, key players and stakeholders to appear before the Upper Chamber and comprehensively brief relevant Senate committees on details of the 2010 contract.
Seconding the motion, Senator Bassey Albert of Akwa Ibom North-East Senatorial District, said the Senate must be briefed by the AGF on the way forward over the judgment against Nigeria.
Also, Solomon Olamilaken of Lagos West and Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, in their separate contributions spoke in favour of the prayer inviting the AGF and other stakeholders to the chamber.
However, as Nigeria moves to squash the $9.6billion fine imposed on her by a British Court over the botched gas supply processing agreement with Process and Industrial Development (P&ID) Limited, the full legal team from Nigeria to argue the case in London, tomorrow, has emerged.
The list, made available, yesterday morning, shows that the Attorney General of the Federation, and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, leads the pack with Anne Akwiwu and Oyin Koleosho, all from the Federal Ministry of Justice.
Other members of the team are: Bala Tsanga, Rotimi Oyedepo, Special Counsel for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, S.K. Salam-Alada of the Central Bank of Nigeria and two other counsel, Timi Balogun and Bradley Doline.
The team has been brainstorming in London since Sunday to proffer a legal breakthrough for Nigeria following the imposition of the heavy fine on the country at the behest of P&ID last month, provoking international outcry.
