State Of ADP Worries Rivers Stakeholder
The President, Etche Cooperative Union, Amb. Godwin Akandu, has expressed concern over the poor state of the Agricultural Development Programme (ADP) in Rivers State.
Amb Akandu said with the current state of ADP offices across the state, rural farmers may not benefit much and appealed to the Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, to help in revamping them for more effective impact on local farmers.
He said most of the ADP offices across the state are in a pitiable state, deroofed, and taken over by wild bushes and reptiles.
“His Excellency has shown interest in commercial agriculture this year, those of us in agric sector give him kudos for such proclamation.
“I am soliciting that ADP in the 23 LGAs should be revamped. A typical example is the one in Okehi wild bush and reptiles have taken over the area”, he stated.
Akandu explained that in the past, ADP offices provided technical advice, inoculation or vaccines to the local farmers in an event of outbreak but regretted that such assistance were today hardly there to help the farmers.
Akandu who is also the Treasurer, Rivers State Cooperative Federation, said Rivers state is not only the oil capital of Nigeria but a state with enviable potentials in agriculture.
He, however, regretted that political leaders especially at the local government level merely pay lip service to agriculture instead of really supporting the rural farmers.
“If you go to these councils, they have HODs, Supervisors for Agriculture, which facilities are they actually supervising?
