Immigration Flags-Off E-Registration Of Immigrants In Rivers
The Rivers State Command of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIM) has commenced the electronic registration of all migrants (non-Nigerians) residing across the 23 local government areas of the state.
Flagging off the electronic registration exercise at Federal Secretariat, Aba Road, Port Harcourt, yesterday, Comptroller of Rivers State Command of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Mr Segun Adegoke said that the exercise will help in improving the security of lives and property in the state.
He added that a comprehensive knowledge of all migrants in the state would also help in the improvement of security in the country.
Adegoke noted that the procedure for the registration was free of charge for regular and irregular migrants in Rivers State.
According to him, “The registration will capture the biometric and photographs of all the (regular and irregular) migrants in the state.
“It is free of charge and for the period of the amnesty there will be no penalty (of deportation or fees to be paid). It is compulsory for visitors staying for more than 90 days in the country. It is in compliance with the provisions of section 2 of the Immigration Act, 2015 and Regulations 24-34 of the Immigration Regulations, 2017”.
The comptroller warned that any person who provides accommodation to the migrants particularly landlord and hoteliers would be held liable for the non-compliance by any migrant.
He added that a special amnesty has been offered to migrants who have overstayed in the country for a period of six months.
Speaking, shortly after the flag-off ceremony, the President of Port Harcourt Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture (PHACCMA), Nabil A. Saleh, appealed to the organised private sector to register their staff who are not citizens of Nigeria.
