Bayelsa Indigenes Lament River Surge
Indigenes of Odi community in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State have lamented the menace of relentless surge of the River Nun.
The indigenes, who claimed that the surge had destroyed four houses and a large portion of the major road in the community, urged the federal government to come to their rescue.
The Secretary, Odi Council of Chiefs, Throughman Abiama, in a statement at the weekend urged the federal government to fast-track the approval of a shoreline project believed to be before the Federal Executive Council.
Abiama also pleaded with the Niger Delta Ministry to quickly intervene and save Odi community from extinction.
The Chairman, Odi Community Development Committee, Mr Goddy Niweigha said if the information available to the community was anything to go by, the project was captured in the 2018 budget and advertised in major channels by the MNDA with contractors having bid and pre-qualified by the BPP.
He said, “We are calling on President Muhammadu Buhari and the Niger Delta Ministry, to come to our aid and ensure that the approval process is fast-tracked.
“Time is of the essence, as you can see. Odi community is on the verge of being washed away into the River Nun.”
The CDC chairman also took the opportunity to commend a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Preye Aganaba, who is believed to have played a vital role in getting the project into the 2018 budget.
He said Aganaba, whom he described as a true son of Odi, had always taken the interest of the people at heart by fighting for their common cause.
