Court Judgement: Elections In Rivers’ll Be Peaceful Without APC -Okah
The Director, Information and Communications, Rivers State Peoples Democratic Party (PD) Campaign Council, Barrister Emma Okah has said that the 2019 general elections in the state will be peaceful without the participation of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Okah said this while reacting to Monday’s Federal High Court judgement which nullified all the primaries conducted by both factions of the APC in the state.
Okah, who is the State Commissioner for Information and Communications described the judgement as victory for democracy and rule of law, saying with the latest development, the fears of violence and insecurity may have been averted.
He said: “It is a victory for democracy and rule of law. We have always believed that due process must be followed in all that we do and we have always believed in the sanctity of the rule of the judiciary.
“This judgement has averted the ominous signs of violence and insecurity because they (APC) have always been the ones associated with violence all the time. We believe that the general elections will be peaceful since they may not be participating in it.
“You can see that in the last local government election where the APC did not participate. That election was largely peaceful.”
Similarly, the State Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Darlington Orji hailed the judgement, saying it is a bitter lesson for politicians to learn.
According to Orji, “For us in PDP we are happy because the judiciary has proven to be the last hope of the common man. I can assure you that it is a bitter lesson for politicians to learn.
“When a man has decided to be an island the result is what you get. No man can truncate democracy through the disobedience of the rule of law.
“We are ready for the general election and as we progress with the campaigns across the 23 local government areas of the state we have a scorecard to present,” the state PDP spokesman said.
