Stakeholders Okay Proposed University Of Environment In Rivers
Reactions have trailed the proposal by Governor Nyesom Wike to upgrade the Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic Bori to a University of Environment .
A cross section of Rivers people who spoke in an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt said that the institution would be useful not only to Rivers State but the entire Niger Delta as it would produce the needed man power to tackle the environmental challenges facing the region.
Speaking in an interview with The Tide, the Publicity Secretary of the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP), Mr Fegalo Nsuke said that MOSOP and the entire Ogonis welcomed the governor’s proposal stressing that this was in line with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Report which urged for a Centre for Environmental Studies in Ogoni.
“MOSOP has for long before now advocated for an institution that will tackle environmental challenges in Ogoni land.
“The move by the Governor is a welcome development” it shows that government is responding to some of the things the Ogonis are asking for,” he said.
The MOSOP’s Publicity Secretary further said that the proposed university would not only train the needed manpower that will help in the cleanup of the area, but will improve the living conditions of communities within its catchment area.
Also speaking the Executive Director of Community Environment Development Network (CEDEN), Mr Menidin Egbo, said the move by Governor Wike was in line with the vision of the founding fathers of Rivers State who sought for an institution to tackle the environmental challenges facing the Niger Delta region.
According to him, the vision of the founding fathers of the state was to be replicated in the Rivers State University, but the policy of the National University Commission (NUC) and other administrative bottlenecks affected the realisation of this laudable vision.
The CEDEN Director further said the proposed institution would not only improve the environment of Rivers State but the entire Niger Delta region.
Governor Wike had in a meeting with “ KAGOTE” the coordinating body of all Ogoni pressure groups, announced plans by the state government to upgrade the Ken Saro Wiwa Polytechnic to a University of Environment.
