Group Institutes Cleanest LGA, Community Awards
A group, Rivers State Sanitation Marshalls says it has instituted monthly awards for the cleanest local government and communities in the State.
State Coordinator of the organisation, Prince Sodin Akiagba who said this in an exclusive interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt also said that the cleanest street and compound in Port Harcourt City and other communities in the State would be recognised.
Akiagba said that the programme was part of the contribution by the sanitation marshalls to institute the culture of cleanliness among the people of the state.
The coordinator said that members of the organisation were already moving from house to house in some local government areas to sensitise the people on the importance of clean environment.
According to him, “the essence is to create awareness for people to know that government alone cannot do everything.”
“That as a people, they are a role to play to keep their environment clean.”
Prince Akiagba further stressed the need for local government councils to key into the programme, stressing that as an arm of government that is closer to the people, councils have a big role to play in ensuring clean environment in communities within the area.
Meanwhile, Emenike Street has emerged the cleanest street for the month of February in the Diobu/Mile III axis of Port Harcourt.
He told The Tide that during the award ceremony which held recently, Emenike Street was presented with a plaque, wheel barrow, brooms and a rake.
Prince Akiagbu said that emphasis is now in the town zone with a view to identifying the cleanest street in that zone for this month of March.
He commended the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA) for its support towards the success of the programme.
