Educationist Wants Improved Quality Of Public Schools
The Principal of Jofag International College in Lafia, Mr Akaangee Andrew, has called for improvement in the quality of public primary and secondary schools.
He made the call during an interview with newsmen in Lafia on Tuesday where he drew comparison between public and private schools.
Andrew said that although he headed a private school, he believed that quality and performance of government schools should stand out.
“I am really worried for our government schools now. They are losing relevance day by day.
“It should not be so. Government should sit up and revamp schools under its care. Private schools like Jofag should only complement government owned schools.
“They should not be leading like it is happening. The situation is saddening.
“Private schools in Nasarawa and other parts of the country are taking the lead, while government schools are following from behind. It should not be so,’’ he said.
He said that the quality of education in government colleges in the past was of international standard.
“We have Government College, Keffi, Government Science School, Lafia, St Augustine which later became Government College, Lafia.
“Admission into these schools was highly competitive. Only the brilliant ones were given admission, but the reverse is the case now,” he said.
“The reason for what we are seeing now is because government has refused to give enough attention to the schools which is not supposed to be so.
“I wish government can go back to the drawing board and bring back the glory of government schools.
“Private schools should only complement the efforts of government schools. They should not be taking the lead.
