Climate Change: NGO To Partner RSG On SDGs Clubs
The Centre for Devlopment and Support Initiative (CEDSI) says it is partnering with the Rivers State Government to establish Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) clubs in schools across Nigeria and the rest of Africa.
The SDG clubs tagged, “Club 17 Africa” focuses on the creation of awareness on climate change.
Climate change and Environment are major components of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
The 17 targeted goals include, eradication of poverty, hunger, provision of quality health education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, climate change, clean energy amongst others.
Country Director, Centre for Development and Support Initiative (CEDSI) Dr (Mrs) Mina Ogbanga told The Tide during the inauguration of the Government Technical College(GTC) Azuabie chapter of Club 17 Africa, goals is to create awareness on the impact of climate change on the environment.
Dr (Mrs) Ogbanga said that the situation will enable students develop the capacity to check all issues relating to climate change on the environment.
She said that the inauguration of the GTC Azuabie chapter brings to 16 the number of schools benefitting from the programme in Rivers State, adding that the target for now is 50 schools.
Accounting to her, Nigeria is being used for the pilot scheme, after which the club will be inaugurated in the rest of Africa.
Also speaking, the Administrative Officer, office of the SDG Rivers State, Mr. Adasi Abbey Dandeson said that the inauguration will help the students to be aware of the impacts of climate change in their immediate environment.
He also said that, the ceremony will help them to develop the capacities to deal with the problems in their immediate environment.
Also speaking, the Coordinator, Club 17 Africa, Mr. Freedom Isikuru described the ceremony as a huge awareness campaign for SDG in Africa.
Mr. Isikuru further said that Nigeria is a kick-off point for the Club 17 Africa, adding that both public and private schools will benefit from the scheme.
The principal of GTC Azuabie, Erastus Adasigwung who spoke with newsmen commended CEDSI for making GTC part of the programme.
