Unhygienic Ways Of Processing Cow Meat Worries Ecologist
An ecologist, Mr. Abdullahi Aremu has warned processors of cow skin in the country to desist from using tyres to prepare meat for human consumption.
Aremu who is the Director General, Advocacy for Environmental and Sanitation Integrity, an NGO said this in an interview with newsmen in Abuja.
He said that the fumes from burning tyres and other unhygienic ways of processing cow skin for human consumption were harmful.
“Beef consumed in the country are processed using very unhygienic and harmful materials.
Whenever I see how the meat we consume in this country is being handled in abattoirs, I always say No, this is not acceptable” he said.
Aremu said that the bonfire used to process meat, particularly cow heads and skin, usually emitted thick toxic smoke which spread from within the abattoirs to the adjoining neighbourhood thereby endangering the lives of residents including the processors.
He urged government at all levels not to condone unhygienic food processing methods in abattoirs across the country.
Aremu stressed that government should deploy veterinary officers and health workers to abattoirs to ensure that the set standards for beef processing is adhered to.
