LASG Tasks Architects On Standard Designs
Governor of Lagos State, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, last Wednesday enjoined architects to continue to develop standard designs that would enhance the infrastructural development of the state.
Ambode, represented by Mr Ade Akinsanya, Commissioner, Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development, gave the advice in Lagos at the opening of the Lagos Architects Forum 2017.
The theme of the forum is ‘Lagos 8.0: An Architectural Autopoiesis’.
According to the governor, architects have vital roles to play in the infrastructural development of the state, and the forum should be a platform for addressing and proffering solutions to infrastructure challenges of the state.
He expressed the hope that the forum would add value to infrastructure development of the state, to make it a true mega city.
Ambode assured the architects of the state government’s support and collaboration in building and designing a livable mega city of Lagos State.
Earlier, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Development) University of Lagos, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, urged the architects to start designing low cost architectural works(buildings) using local materials.
Ogunsola said that using local materials for the architectural works would make the building designs less expensive and affordable to low income earners, noting that greater percentage of the population fall under this category.
“Presently, Lagos State comprises of about 21 million people in population. And this has resulted to a lot of slums in the state.
“It means that Lagos State needs to play up its game to enhance the infrastructural development to meet up with the growing population.
“Therefore, Architects need to come up with architectural building designs which an average and low-income earner can afford, so that at least 70 per cent of the population can have access to decent accommodation,” she said.
