Traders Laud Gov For Prompt Refuse Disposal
The Masaka Traders Union in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, have lauded Governor Tanko Almakura, for ensuring adequate and prompt refuse disposal at the market.
The union’s chairman, Mr David Emmanuel, who gave the commendation in an interview with newsmen recently in Masaka, urged the governor to fix the roads within the market.
“I want to commend the efforts of the State and Local Governments for ensuring that, refuse dumps are now evacuated immediately unlike before.
“Before now, the refuse piled up and caused human and vehicular traffic by the market, in fact, it usually posed a lot of health dangers to both sellers and buyers.
“With the new government strategy, whereby wastes are evacuated on a daily basis, and prosecution awaits any indiscriminate disposal of refuse, the people are now relieved and comfortable.
“The government has done well in that regard and we are happy; we urge it to maintain the current system of refuse evacuation at the market,’’ he said.
Emmanuel, however, called on the State Government to also assist in fixing the market roads to encourage both buyers and sellers conduct business during the raining season without hindrances.
“As we enter the raining season, the roads within the market are taking bad shape and if not fixed, it will negatively affect both the market community.
“By the time it is deep into the season, the roads will be muddy to the extent that, it becomes difficult for the people, motorcycles and vehicles to ply the roads.
“Consequently, it will discourage people from coming to the market when it rains and subsequently, our sales will drop.
“I believe that if the roads are fixed, it can help, sales will increase and the revenue generation by both the State and Local Government will also increase,’’ he said.
The chairman, however, said that, the relationship between the Local Government and market union on taxation was cordial, adding that “our members pay their taxes and levies regularly’’.
The Tide source reports that, Masaka is a large community in Karu LGA, close to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) that houses thousands of workers from Abuja and its environs.

Kenyan Runners Dominate Berlin Marathons
Kenya made it a clean sweep at the Berlin Marathon with Sabastian Sawe winning the men’s race and Rosemary Wanjiru triumphing in the women’s.
Sawe finished in two hours, two minutes and 16 seconds to make it three wins in his first three marathons.
The 30-year-old, who was victorious at this year’s London Marathon, set a sizzling pace as he left the field behind and ran much of the race surrounded only by his pacesetters.
Japan’s Akasaki Akira came second after a powerful latter half of the race, finishing almost four minutes behind Sawe, while Ethiopia’s Chimdessa Debele followed in third.
“I did my best and I am happy for this performance,” said Sawe.
“I am so happy for this year. I felt well but you cannot change the weather. Next year will be better.”
Sawe had Kelvin Kiptum’s 2023 world record of 2:00:35 in his sights when he reached halfway in 1:00:12, but faded towards the end.
In the women’s race, Wanjiru sped away from the lead pack after 25 kilometers before finishing in 2:21:05.
Ethiopia’s Dera Dida followed three seconds behind Wanjiru, with Azmera Gebru, also of Ethiopia, coming third in 2:21:29.
Wanjiru’s time was 12 minutes slower than compatriot Ruth Chepng’etich’s world record of 2:09:56, which she set in Chicago in 2024.
