WaterAid To Extend ServicesTo Urban Areas
WaterAid, an international organisation, has pledged to extend Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) services from rural areas to urban areas in Nigeria.
Dr Michael Ojo, the Country Director of the organisation, made this known in an interview with newsmen in Abuja.
“The work we have been doing has been in the rural communities of mainly Jigawa, Bauchi, Benue, Plateau, Enugu and Ekiti states.
“We work in local governments and we also work mainly in the rural communities, which is why we are particular about access to water, sanitation and hygiene.
“The reason for that is because, that is where the gap or the need is greatest.
“Over the last few years, one of the things that we have begun to see is as populations have grown in urban centres and the pressure on available water sources has increased.
According to him, some urban areas and cities will also benefit from the scheme expecting the suburbs around Abuja, those slums, that is where the organisation is beginning to find lot of problems.
“So, going forward, our programme is going to expand into urban WASH more specifically now. So is not just going to be rural.
Ojo said that, there is the need to give priority to WASH services through provision of potable water and clean environment as the first step to fight diseases within the immediate environment.
WaterAid, is an international NGO working in Nigeria to improve access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene services in rural communities across the country.
