Corps Members Posting: Omuma Stakeholders Move To Lift Ban
Stakeholders in Omuma Local Government Area of Rivers State, have commenced moves toward ensuring that corps members are posted to the area, eight years after authorities of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) stopped posting corps members to the area as a result of the kidnap of three corps members in the area.
The Chairman, Caretaker Committee of Omuma Local Government Council, Hon Chisom Nwaiwu disclosed in an exclusive interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt that stakeholders have begun a move to reverse the trend.
According to him, a delegation has visited the Rivers State chapter of NYSC and that discussions have started to achieve the plan.
The council boss who regretted that for eight years no corps member had been posted to the area because of the ugly kidnap incident which, according to him was carried out by the notorious Oshishi Kankwu and his boys who though from outside Rivers State, carried out their wicked activities in the area.
He apologised to the NYSC authorities for the incident and appealed for posting of corps members to the area.
Nwaiwu assured that the council will do everything possible to ensure that all necessary security and logistic arrangements would be effected for Corps members that would be posted to the area.
Collaborating the Chairman’s position, the Paramount Ruler of Omuma land, HRH Eze Monday Ojiegbe, Onye Ishi Agwuru Omu II of Omuma said the non posting of corps members to Omuma for eight years has impacted negatively on the people, especially the children who love education.
According to Ojiegbe, the situation had demoralised many youth who love education especially higher education.
He regretted that all the secondary schools in the area that benefit from the services of the Corps members had been denied such services.
The paramount ruler who is also the Chairman of Omuma Council of Traditional Rulers and Chiefs assured that the council would do all that is needed to provide conducive environment for corps members who would be posted to the area.
He stressed that Omuma is 95 percent crime free as a result of the Governor Nyesom Wike’s amnesty programme in the State.
