Union Seeks Concession Terms Implementation
The Maritime Work
ers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), has called for the implementation of the concession agreement reached with the Nigeria Ports Authority and Port Terminal Operators during concessionaire period of the ports.
The call was made by the union’s National President, Comrade Anthony Emmanuel Nted in Lagos on Wednesday while speaking to newsmen shortly after the union organised a workshop with the theme “ Managing Crisis Change and Industrial Relations in Nigeria Dock Industry: The Role of Shop Stewards in Supporting Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria to Win on Key Issues”
Nted said that the port terminal operators have failed to implement the agreement reached on medical facility and kitting of dockworkers during the concessioing period.
The union leader said that members of the union are faced with challenges in the discharge of their responsibility following the suspension of the operations of the central gear store system by the management of NPA.
He said that the concesion necessitated the NPA to hand over port operations to private terminal operators which has invariably led to poor kitting of dockworkers in the performance of their duties at the ports.
He accused the management of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIWASA) of the failure in their responsibility to monitor and prevent the use of unregistered dockworkers by some terminal operators and private jetties owners.
He called on NIMASA to enforce the concession terms of agreement rather than denying the dockworkers employment opportunities at the ports.
The MWUN President also called for a review of governments’ policies especially import policies that have forced many importers out of business in recent times and denying the government the much-desired revenue generation at the ports.
He said that these government policies are having adverse effects on operation and operators at the ports, stressing that the situation is also affecting dockworkers, income monthly.
Nted said that the union organised the workshop to provide a unique opportunity for exchange of ideas, challenges and interaction with key union leaders of the dockworkers.
