Salary Arrears: NLC Makes Case For Rivers Teachers
The Nigeria Labour
Congress (NLC), Rivers State chapter, has called on the state government to ensure that teachers salaries are promptly paid.
Speaking to The Tide in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, State Chairperson of the NLC, Comrade Beatrice Itubo, urged the state government to ensure that the backlog of salary arrears of the post primary, junior secondary and primary school teachers are released for immediate payment having completed their biometric exercise since July.
Ituobo said that it has become necessary for the congress to intervene in the plights of the teachers in the state following complaints which have inundated the congress by concerned teachers over non-salary payment.
She said that the state government needs to consider the present economic reality and alleviate the hardship the teachers are going through for the past months, stressing that a lot of the teachers’ families are ill without the necessary wherewithal for medical care and expenses.
She urged the government to consider those that have successfully done their biometrics and confirmed as authentic public servants and pay them their salaries arrears.
The NLC chairperson said, that schools in the state would soon resurge without teachers receiving their salaries, adding that many teachers cannot afford school fees for their wards when schools resume.
She said that the congress is open to dialogue on the best way forward for education in the state, stressing that NLC would continue to support the state government in all ramifications especially in its developmental strides.
