RSUST Sends 338 Student Teachers On Practice
The Faculty of Technical
and Science Education, Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), has sent-forth a total of 338 student teachers to Primary and Secondary Schools in the state for the 2016 teaching practice exercise.
Disclosing this on Thursday, Dean of the Faculty, Professor Ken Akaninwor noted that the exercise was expected to take place in 59 primary and secondary schools in the State.
Professor Akaninwor, who harped on the importance of the exercise to the students, stressed that it was a professional requirement in education, “which should be fulfilled by all students before they are issued certificates”, adding that it carries six points.
Speaking in a keynote address at the occasion, Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Blessing Didia, described the exercise as a “development effort”.
According to him, “when teachers engage in teaching, the goal is to assist the learner think, develop a plan to solve problems and take responsibility for their actions”.
Professor Didia, who was represented by the Dean, Faculty of Technical and Science Education, Professor Akaninwor, noted the importance of the teaching profession.
“The teaching profession is so important because every graduate in the medical, legal, engineering, entertainment and other professions were once taught by a teacher”, he said.
He charged the 338 student teachers to be worthy ambassadors of the university, saying that they should “be dynamic in your practice and inspire your students to aim for excellence”.
Also speaking, the Director, Academic Planning of the University, Professor Sunny Okoroma, called on the students to “uphold the ethics of teaching, and should not influence your students with your ideologies”.
