Flyover Fencing: Elder Statesman Cautions Against Use Of Tyres
An elder statesman
in Rivers State, Rev. Sokari Soberekon, has warned of the dangers involved in the use of inflammable material such as expired tyres for the on-going fencing of the Port Harcourt flyover.
The elder statesman who said this in an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt said that expired tyres are inflammable and can be ignited with spark.
He said that such situation is not only dangerous to the health of the flyover but also to the surrounding environment.
“It is dangerous to use expired tyres to fence the flyover. At the slightest spark, it can ignite fire which can burn the supporting pillars of the flyover”.
Soberekon who is one of the founding fathers of the state stressed the need for Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike to call those responsible for the on-going to order fencing project to avoid the possible outbreak of fire in the area.
“Niger Delta people brought Governor Wike to do work for the state and he meant well. He should not allow detractors to stain his good work”.
They should use blocks and fence the flyover and make it as a park instead of condemned tyres”, he said.
Meanwhile Rev. Soberekon has also condemned the proliferation of illegal trading posts under the flyover. He said that the situation is not only effecting the beauty of the flyover but posing serious security threats as criminals can hide inside them to rob innocent people.
According to him, in the past, these places were the abode of criminals until former governor Odili fenced the area, pointing out that at the moment traders have taken advantage of the destruction of the iron fence to infiltrate the area.
He urged the authorites to act fast before more harm will be done to innocent people.
