Sustainable Energy: FG Launches BEEG
The Federal Government
of Nigeria, has launched the Building Energy Efficiency Guideline BEEG for the country to ensure access to sustainable energy service.
According to the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Kashola, the document was a collaboration with the German Agency for International Cooperation(GIZ), under the Nigerian Energy Support Programme (NESP) adding that the guideline is expected to be a handbook for all professional in the building industry environment.
The Minister, who was speaking at an event in Abuja, stated that the document also consists of the reality of energy efficiency in building and factors to consider in achieving it, adding that in future, the document may be harmonsed into the National Building code as its energy efficiency component.
He noted that factors to consider in maximising energy efficiency in building include, specific micro climate conditions of the site, site selection, orientation and shape of building in line with will direction and other environmental conditions.
Fashola observed that the present reality of insufficient energy supply in the country has been a major bane to the socio-economic development of the country, adding that this had made government to explore all sources to achieve incremental power.
He said, “it was the realisation of this challenge that made the heads of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), governments in July, 2013, here in Abuja renew their commitment to the provision and access to sustainable energy service in West Africa, and the issue of energy efficiency building, to be unscaled in ECOWAS Energy Efficiency Policy (EEEP) as well as ECOWAS Renewal Energy policy (EREP).
