RVHA Okays N14.016bn Fund For RSG

The Rivers State House of Assembly has approved the request by the State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike to access N14,016,000,000.00 from the recently unveiled Federal Government Support Budget Facilities Fund to the 36 States of the Federation.
The Assembly’s approval followed the earlier request letter submitted to the House by Governor Wike seeking the approval to access N14,016 billion facilities fund from Federal Government to fast track infrastructural projects and salaries in the state.
The request relieved the approval after half-hour debate by the Assembly at its plenary session in Port Harcourt, yesterday.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Adams Dabororudima, announced the approval of the facilities fund after all 14 lawmakers present at the plenary voted in favour of the governor’s request.
Moving a motion for approval, the Leader of the House, Hon. Martyns Amaewhule, expressed the need for the 8th Assembly to approve the facilities fund, noting that the last bailout loan requested for by Governor Nyesom Wike from Federal Government was not granted, despite the approval of the Assembly.
Supporting the motion, the Chief Whip of the Assembly, Hon. Evans Bipi, explained that the Federal Government’s support budget facilities was not a loan to the State government, but rather a special fund from the Federal Government for states to leverage to cushion the economic hardships on the state governments in the country.
Bipi, who noted the deepening economic condition in the country, urged the lawmakers to grant the governor’s request, saying that the support budget facilities fund would assist the state government to deliver more of the democratic dividends to Rivers people.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State House of Assembly has committed a bill to convert Rivers State College of Arts and Science to Port Harcourt Polytechnic to the education Committee of the House.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Adams Dabotorudima announced the committal of the bill to the committee after debate by the lawmakers on what should be the name of the Polytechnic, and its Satellite Campuses in the state.
The lawmaker representing Obio/Akpor Constituency 11, Hon. Victor Ihunwo said, the institution will create more job opportunities and also add value to the state educational standard for Rivers’ young school leavers, it converted.
Also speaking, the lawmaker representing Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Constituency, Hon. Dickson Ehie, expressed the need for the institution to be converted, and urged the state government to maintain the existing campuses of the institution, if converted to a Polytechnic.
According to him, Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor areas are congested with government institutions and companies, as he sought the support of the House to move the institution outside the developed city of Port Harcourt metropolis.
