Housing Estate: RSHPDA, RIWAMA Okay House-To-House Refuse Collection
The Rivers State Housing
and Property Development Authority and the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA) have endorsed the house to house refuse collection method adopted by residents of Iriebe Housing Estate.
The Agencies which said this during a town hall meeting with some of the residents of the estate, however said that the programme will be subjected to periodic review with the view to assessing its impact on the overall cleanliness of the estate.
The General Manager of the Rivers State Housing and property Development Authority Architect Iyerefa Cookey Gam said that the Authority cannot fold its hands and allow the estate to be littered by refuse.
Architect CookeyGam called on all residents to work with the central committee to ensure the success of the programme.
He also said that, the Authority will not allow any dumpsite in the area, stressing that the town hall meeting was to seek for ways of partnering with the residents to improve the sanitary level of the estate.
Also speaking Director of Administration of the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA) Mr Ian Abreham Gobo, said that the Agency is fully in support of the house to house refuse collection adopted by residents of the estate.
Mr Gobo said that, the method is also being encouraged in other estates across the city of Port Harcourt, adding that it shows that Government alone cannot do every thing for the people.
He said that RIWAMA is not only committed to the success of the programme, but also improved upon.
According to him, the contractor will be allowed access to all government dumpsites in Port Harcourt and environs.
Also speaking, chairman of the Iriebe Housing Estate Central Committee, Mr Fred Ogbara said that the decision to adopt the house to house refuse collection method was to ensure the removal of all waste dumpsites in the estate.
Mr Ogbara said that every household in the estate pays six hundred naira (N600) monthly to the refuse collector, stressing that the method has gone along way in improving the sanitary condition of the estate.
Also speaking, the refuse contractor, Engr Segun Tujani said that some communities have made it difficult to assess their dumpsites and urged for the support of the Agency.
