NES Seeks Govt Support On Domestic Waste Mgt
The Chairman, Nigerian
Environment Society (NES), Rivers State, Mr Adeyemi Adewale has called on the state government to partner with researchers to turn around what he called “the abundant domestic waste” to energy in Nigeria.
Mr Adewale, who stated this to newsmen immediately after the 40th inaugural lecturel by Professor Confidence Wachukwu, titled “Microorganism: Providing Solutions to some food and Environmental challenges”, said governments support will go a long way to enhance available waste to energy in the country.
According to him, Nigeria has a huge environmental problem on managing its domestic, industrial waste effectively.
“Proper waste management will promote healthy living of the people, generate employment and create wealth as well as increase government revenue in the state”, he said.
The chairman, who identified pancity of funds as a major challenge facing NES, stated that myriads of people leave in areas where no adequate waste management systems are carried out.
On what he has done since his inception as the chairman of the Nigeria Environmental Society, Adewale said, his organization has carried out series of advocacy visits to identified stakeholders, ensured that members’ welfare is on the front burner, as well as building the skills and knowledge of members on developmental issues, among others.
The Environmentalists, however, urged stakeholders to collaborate with microbiologists, Agricultural Scientists and Environmentalists to turn around the abundant waste to energy.
This, he said, is because Nigeria has a resource in waste that can provide” a much safer decentralized flow of energy.
