RIVCAS Set To Produce Entrepreneurs
Toward enhancing the
economy of Rivers State and Nigeria at large, the management of the Rivers State College of Arts and Science (RIVCAS) says it has put in place measures that would enable the college churn out entrepreneurs.
Acting Provost of the School, Dr Samuel B. Kalagbor, made this revelation in an exclusive interview with The Tide shortly after the school’s 25th matriculation ceremony.
According to Dr Kalagbor, “as a means of ensuring the manifestation of this plan, there is an existing entrepreneurship centre responsible for taking students on the practical aspects of various skills acquisition programmes. This is in addition to the theoretical aspects taught in class”.
Beyond this, the acting provost said efforts are made to collaborate with various categories of entrepreneurs to put graduates of the College in good stead to be self-reliant.
“As we speak now, we have been able to go into collaboration with successful entrepreneurs, professionals in various areas, such as fish production, tailoring and allied entrepreneurship programmes, so that at the end of the day we should be able to churn out graduates who are not job seekers, but those who will be able to employ themselves and others.
“By so doing, they will be contributing to the local economy and also help in gradually reducing the unemployment rate in the country,” he said.
Meanwhile, Dr Kalagbor also gave the hint that when the college finally attains its rightful status as a polytechnic, things will be better off.
“We are envisaging metamorphosing into an urban polytechnic. Once this is done, particularly in terms of reflection of our polytechnic status in name, we intend to annex every opportunity that we have.
“In doing that, we will also take into consideration the local peculiarities, environment and be able to incorporate everything into our programme,”Dr Kalagbor said.
The River State Commissioner for Education, Dr Peters Nwagor has called on media practitioners in Rivers State to deploy their various communication platforms toward promoting government programmes and policies aimed at achieving sustainable development in the education sector. Dr. Nwagor made the appeal when members of the Etche Ethnic Practicing Journalists (EEPJ) paid him a courtesy visit in Office in Port Harcourt. The Commissioner emphasized the strategic role of the media in shaping public perception, promoting government initiatives, and supporting policies capable of improving the quality of education and human capital development in the state. According to him, constructive media engagement remains essential in creating public awareness on educational reforms, students’ welfare, infrastructural improvements, and other interventions being implemented by the state government.
