Expert Wants Toilets In Public Places
An environmentalist, Dr
Godknows Oyepho, has called on the various tiers of government to build conveniences at strategic points in order to check indiscriminate defecation around public places.
Oyepho, who spoke to The Tide in an exclusive interview at the weekend in Port Harcourt said this has become necessary due to the mass movement of the populace from the rural areas to the urban areas.
He said toilets and uninary places should be built near major bus stops and motor parks to enable those pressed to relieve themselves.
According to Oyepho, this would not only improve the sanitary condition of the environment but it would also check the harassment of innocent people by touts.
“Most times touts attack unsuspecting members of the public who pose as recognised government agent and sometime end up parting with some money before letting them go, he said.
The environmentalists explained that it was not an offence to be pressed as it was a natural phenomenon.
He expressed regret that even in some public places, such facilities were not up to standard even as he tasked the various governments to take the issue serious.
Dr Oyepho explained that Nigeria was a signatuory to several international bodies in the provision of water and sanitation to its populace even as he wondered on compliance on the part of the federal government.
