Realising Operation Zero PotHoles Initiative
Against the backdrop of the deplor
able state of internal road net
works in the Port Harcourt Township and the Diobu surburb, the Rivers State Government recently initiated the Operation Zero Pot-hole programme. The programme is being funded with a N100 billion loan from Zenith Bank Plc.
The initiative which seeks to restore to use, most of the internal road networks in the affected areas is commendable given the hardships the poor state of the roads has inflicted on the residents and its attendant toll on business and the economy of the state.
That the State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike hit the ground running on his inauguration day when he led a delegation from the inauguration ground to inspect some bad roads in Diobu axis of Port Harcourt is instructive. Notwithstanding pockets of opposition and criticisms against taking a loan to finance the project as well as the choice of expatriate firms for the rehabilitation of internal road networks, the new government by the initiative, has demonstrated its desire to promote healthy living, commerce and tourism in the state.
We commend the state government for this timely and worthy initiative which has come at a time virtually all the internal road networks in the Port Harcourt Township and other suburbs are virtually impassable.
It is sad to note that the impassable nature of a number of these roads in Port Harcourt metropolis and Diobu axis has made them safe haven for marauders and criminals who take advantage of the bad roads to dispossess innocent citizens of valuable properties, as well as commit other heinous crimes.
With the on-going rehabilitation exercise on these roads, however, it is expected that by the time the new government clocks 100 days in office, the Diobu axis of the metropolis would have worn a new look befitting of the status of an oil-rich city.
We want to, therefore, urge Julius Berger and CCECC handling both contracts to exhibit good faith in delivering the jobs on schedule so as to justify the confidence and trust reposed in them by the state government.
Given the advance payment of 50 per cent of the contract value paid by the State government to the contracting firms, we expect Julius Berger and CCECC to live up to their names as reputable and experienced firms with a track record by providing good services that will be durable for a long period of time. By this also, the contracting firms will be contributing to the socio-economic development of the environment in which they operate.
We also urge road users to give the contracting firms their cooperation while the project lasts. Road users should exercise patience and show understanding while enduring the temporary discomfort associated with the on-going road rehabilitation.
As the saying goes, no one can make omelette without breaking eggs.
