Doctor Urges Precautionary Measures Against Ebola Return
Worried by series of re
ports on the return of the dreaded Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in some African Countries, a Nigerian Medical Practitioner Dr Jude Amah has urged the Federal Government to take adequate precautionary measures against the return of the disease in the country.
In an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt, Friday, Amah said that government and the people have major roles to play in keeping the disease out of the shores of Nigeria.
According to him, the health sector is complex, one that defines economic growth, adding that the people have to be healthy before they can be very productive.
Amah, a private medical consultant called for more vigilance at the nation’s border posts to prevent the entry of people who might be suspected to be infected with the Ebola Virus.
“Everybody is talking about Ebola, Ebola, Ebola. We are not out of the woods yet because the main public health infrastructure is still not available yet.
“We are not there yet, but we are on the way and so we cannot rest on our oars. There is resurgence of Ebola in Liberia and Sierra Leone now and we have to sit-up in the country”, he said.
The medical consultant stressed the need for government to enlighten the public on good personal hygiene, hand washing to keep the disease at bay.
He insisted that the fact that the World Health Organisation (WHO) had declared Nigeria free of the Ebola Virus in October last year is not a guarantee, that “we should be careless about our health”.
