Gov Promises To Respect Principles Of Democracy
Governor Udom
Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State has promised to respect the principles of separation of power in his relationship with the state House of Assembly.
The governor made the promise in Uyo in a congratulatory message to the newly elected speaker of the state House of Assembly, Mr Aniekan Uko.
Uko, the PDP member representing Ibesikpo/Asutan constituency, was elected unopposed last Monday night as the Speaker of the 6th Assembly.
Emmanuel expressed the hope that the state House of Assembly would work with him harmoniously as the last Assembly worked with his predecessor.
He noted that his administration needed the cooperation of the legislature to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people of the state.
“One defining factor of democracy is the principle of separation of power and the need for the three arms to work in strict cooperation to advance the people’s interest.
“I pledge to work with you, the Speaker and your colleagues to do the people’s work,’’ he said.
The governor also commended the House for the peaceful manner in which the Speaker emerged and prayed for love among members.
“This is good for our democracy, the notion and belief that in any political contest there must always be a winner and the winner must be magnanimous in victory.
“This gesture was amply demonstrated by our immediate past President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, and I am glad to see that spirit manifest here in Akwa Ibom,” Emmanuel said.
Our correspondent reports that Mr Effiong Bassey (PDP- Oron/Udung Uko) defeated Mrs Felicia Bassey (PDP-Okobo) to emerge Deputy Speaker.
